Leipzig, Germany (dpa) - Israeli and Jewish authors are to gain special attention at this year's Leipzig Book Fair, Germany's spring exposition of new books, with Israel's ambassador Shimon Stein to open a series of literary readings, it was announced Monday.

The presentations by authors Louis Begley, Ralph Giordano and Michael Degen, are to take place under the aegis of the Bertelsmann Book Club of Germany during the March 22-25 fair, the club said.

The events will be grouped in the categories "German-Israeli Relations" and "Jewish Worlds," amid a promotional programme that also includes events on mystery writing, the differences between Germans of east and west and similar topics.

Interviews with all the authors invited by Bertelsmann are to be broadcast by the documentary channel of ZDF public television.

Unlike the Frankfurt Book Fair in October, which is a meeting place for the world book industry, the smaller Leipzig fair targets mainly German booksellers and readers.
