STUTTGART - Jenson Button believes he is as good as Michael Schumacher, the BAR-Honda driver said in an interview published in Germany's Bild am Sonntag newspaper.

"My driving skills are on his level," the 24-year-old is quoted as saying. He added that he wanted to become world champion during the next two years, while the Ferrari driver was still racing.

"I am very eager to race against him."

Button, who announced a few days ago that he will be moving to Williams-BMW at the end of the season, said that he hoped to be able to challenge for the title with his new team.

"With Williams I can immediately challenge for the title. That is my main objective. I finally want to challenge Michael and I think Williams will be able to give me a car to do that," he said.

He added that he believed it would be easier to become world champion with Williams than with any other team.

BAR team principal, David Richards, however said that the team had not accepted Button's announcement. "On 20 July, we exercised the option we had on him. He belongs to us."

He said that they would take legal steps if Button failed to address the issue with the team by Monday evening.

Button is presently third in the drivers' standing behind the Ferrari duo of Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello.
