20 July 2006, BERLIN - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has written to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, a government spokesman said Thursday without disclosing the content of the letter. The note was handed to the German charge d'affaires in Tehran by Iranian Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki. Germany is one of the western countries pressuring Iran to halt its uranium enrichment programme in exchange for an offer of political and economic incentives. BERLIN - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has written to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, a government spokesman said Thursday without disclosing the content of the letter.

The note was handed to the German charge d'affaires in Tehran by Iranian Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki.

Germany is one of the western countries pressuring Iran to halt its uranium enrichment programme in exchange for an offer of political and economic incentives.

Iran said Thursday it would reply to the offer on August 22.
