HAMBURG - "Prior to my cosmetic surgery I was always embarrassed to go into a sauna or onto a nude beach," says a German woman who only wanted to be identified as Jasmine.

It was not her bosom or her tummy or her hips that gave her cause for pause.

The 35-year-old Frankfurt woman underwent cosmetic surgery to correct what she felt was an unattractive vagina, according to a report in Focus news magazine, which says Jasmine reflects a growing trend in Germany.

Surgery to reshape the labia and other areas of the vagina is picking up fast, say plastic surgeons. While some women undergo the operations to improve comfort, many want to conform to ideals set by magazine centrefolds.

"The demand has increased dramatically," says Dr. Stefan Gress, a plastic surgeon in Munich. "I have about 20 patients a month come to me asking for intimate cosmetic procedures."

He says labiaplasty and vaginal cosmetic surgery are the fastest growing emerging growth trend in cosmetic plastic surgery.

In a labiaplasty, the surgical reshaping of female external genital structures, larger or uneven inner vaginal lips are cut and shortened.

Another cosmetic surgery - vaginal rejuvenation - is also rising. It entails tightening the vaginal and perineum area, often stretched during childbirth. Some doctors also claim it increases sexual pleasure for both partners.

"Women want to be tight," Gress told Focus. "They don't want sagging or loose labia. I can't tell you how many centrefold pictures woman have brought into me saying 'I want to look like this.'"

Gress, who charges some EUR 2000 for a labiaplasty procedure, learned his skills in America, where one plastic surgeon, Dr. David Matlock, promises his patients "the perfect vagina".

"I've had women who come in and say to me, 'He's small can you tighten me up'" said Matlock, who was quoted as saying he performed between 40 to 60 vaginal cosmetic surgeries a month in his Beverly Hills practice, charging around EUR 4,000 for a labiaplasty.

He said he grosses EUR 200,000 a month performing these surgeries and noted he has had women come in from all over the world for vaginal cosmetic surgery.

Matlock, who says he performs more vaginal cosmetic surgery than anyone else in America, claims women are having labiaplasties and other forms of vaginal cosmetic surgery because "longer, lose hanging inner lips is a sign of aging and women don't want to look old there, either."

"Even young women will look at loose hanging labia as a sign of aging and want to have it done," Focus quoted him as saying.

There is no indication, however, that vaginal reconstructive surgery enhances sexual pleasure.

"Anyone who thinks that a tighter vagina will give her greater sexual satisfaction is greatly mistaken," says Dr. Carolin Nestle- Kraemling, head of gynaecological surgery at Dusseldorf University Hospital.

"Indeed, such surgical procedures can be risky," she warns. "There is a high risk of nerve endings being destroyed or blunted. That could lead to tissue scarring and possible loss of sensation."
