MARKTL - The apartment house where Pope Benedict XIV was born in a small town in Germany 78 years ago is up for sale.
The owner said on Thursday she would sell it to the highest bidder because the growing number of sightseers every day made the property unsuitable as a private residence.
A plaque on the front of the three-storey building, on one side of the marketplace in Marktl, marks it as the papal birthplace.
Benedict was born there when the ground floor was a police station and there were apartments above for police families. The building later became a private home and has been remodelled.
The authorities in Marktl, near the Austrian border, have a right to pre-empt the top bid.
They have already said they plan to build a museum in Marktl describing the rise of theologian Joseph Ratzinger to the papacy.
Ratzinger was born at home on April 16, 1927 and baptized the same day. The family moved away from the town when he was a young child because his father was transferred.
