Vienna (dpa) A bad joke caused an Austrian Airlines plane en route to Frankfurt, central Germany, to return to Vienna, the Austrian Kronen Zeitung reported.

An anonymous caller had warned of a bomb on flight OS 127 to Frankfurt last Saturday. The plane carrying 120 passengers returned to Vienna in mid-flight and was searched by police.

An explosive device was not found. Police traced the call to a Vienna hotel. The caller, a German businessman, admitted making the threat because of a "drinking bet".

He said he wanted to win a bet with a colleague that the other man would not make it to Frankfurt.

The caller can expect to face charges carrying a maximum three- year prison sentence for causing a false alarm, as well as being most likely sued for damages by Austrian Airlines.
