DUSSELDORF - Gaston Gaudio held off three fighting, scrambling comeback charges from a fired-up Lleyton Hewitt, earning a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5) victory Friday to put his nation a win away from the final at the EUR 2.1-million World Team Championship.

Rain which had been threatening for much of a contest lasting just under three hours began to fall as the marathon ended with Hewitt coming from 2-5 down in the final-set tie-breaker only to miss out on victory thanks to two concluding errors.

If Mariano Zabaleta can defeat Mark Philippoussis on the heavy clay of the Rochusclub in the second singles match, 2002 winners Argentina will Saturday meet fellow South Americans and holders Chile for a second consecutive shot at the team title.

The Argentinians are playing without world-beaters Guillermo Coria, the world number 3, and David Nalbandian, but remain undefeated so far this week at the French Open tuneup.
