Munich (dpa) - New Year revellers in a downtown Munich shopping mall spent the changeover to 2007 in a jammed lift, with German firefighters passing refreshments to the 14 through a hole in the roof.

The hydraulic-powered elevator in the historic Schrannenhalle became jammed between the basement and ground floor an hour before midnight. It took 45 minutes before anyone heard their call for help and they were not freed till 1.15 am Monday.

Firefighters said Monday they cut the roof off the cabin and helped the occupants climb free by ladder.

The elevator was in the Schrannenhalle, a Munich attraction lined with boutiques and cafes that opened in 2005. It is a reconstruction of a historic 1854 indoor market made of steel girders and glass.
