COLOGNE - Three employees at a amusement park in western Germany faced charges of negligent manslaughter Wednesday after a 14-year-old girl hurtled to her death on a bungee-catapult ride.

The 14-year-old and a 16-year-old companion had not been strapped in when the amusement ride was released prematurely, sending their compartment soaring some 50 metres into the air.

The 16-year-old managed to cling to the metal compartment, the other girl fell to the ground as fair-goers looked on in horror.

Eyewitnesses told SWR radio Wednesday two attendants were still in the process of strapping patrons into their seats when a third attendant threw the switch that sent the two girls' compartment soaring aloft.

Authorities closed the ride pending investigation.
