Germany's Schaeuble 'conscious': spokesman

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble was "conscious" in a Brussels hospital Sunday after suffering an allergic reaction during crisis talks to protect the eurozone, his spokesman said.

"He is doing well under the circumstances," said Michael Offer, adding that Schaeuble was "conscious" and "understands what is being said to him" after taking new medication for the first time, according to his ministry.

Schaeuble was replaced at the emergency euro talks by German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere, who travelled to Brussels at short notice.

Schaeuble's hospitalisation came shortly before exit polls suggested that German Chancellor Angela Merkel's coalition was headed for a bruising defeat in a key regional election.

The loss was set to cost Merkel's coalition its majority in the upper house, amid voter anger over a EU-IMF bailout for debt-stricken Greece.
