Berlin (dpa) - Chancellor Angela Merkel's government agreed Wednesday to extend the nation's military mission in Afghanistan.

At the same time as extending the mandate for the 3,000 German troops stationed as part the NATO-led ISAF force, it agreed to also extend the deployment of six Tornado reconnaissance jets based in Afghanistan to help in the struggle with Taliban fighters.

The German Parliament is to vote next month on renewing the mandate and deploying the Tornado jets.

The government's decision to extend the mandate and the forthcoming parliamentary debate comes against the backdrop of opinion polls showing growing opposition in the German electorate to continuing to deploy troops in Afghanistan.
