Berlin (dpa) - Germany plans to withdraw some of its 850 troops serving with a European Union force in Bosnia-Herzegovina, a defence ministry spokesman said Monday.

The spokesman did not indicate how many German soldiers would be withdrawn but said he expected 1,000 members of the currently 7,000-strong force would be withdrawn.

The EU has taken command of a military force in Bosnia-Herzegovina which was led by NATO between December 1996 and December 2004.

Known as SFOR while under NATO, the troops helped maintain a secure environment and facilitated the country's reconstruction in the wake of its devastating 1992 to 1995 war.
