HAMBURG - Germany looked set to scrap a planned tour of America in December 2005 as football authorities rejected reports a cancellation could saddle them with a huge compensation claim.

Harald Stenger, spokesman for the German Football Federation (DFB), denied the federation could face a claim in the millions if it went back on agreements for Germany to play Mexico and the United States.

Kicker sports magazine Monday said the DFB had contractual agreements with the Mexican and US federations to play matches in December 2005.

But Stenger said there had been merely "preliminary talks with potential opponents", with no contracts signed.

Coach Juergen Klinsmann had indicated he wanted to scrap the America tour, planned for next season's Bundesliga winter break, saying his players needed to rest before the 2006 World Cup finals.

Assistant coach Joachim Loew has now confirmed the new thinking, saying: "This America tour will now probably not take place."

Oliver Bierhoff, the German national team's sports manager, is expected to recommend cancelling the tour at a meeting with Bundesliga managers next on Monday.

The tour had been planned by Klinsmann's predecessor, Rudi Voeller, but the new coach wants the players to rest during next season's winter break.

The German team sets off on an Asia tour next month and will also be playing as hosts at the Confederations Cup next summer, giving international players little time to recuperate.

Klinsmann wants the backing of the league in any decision to scrap the America tour. In an interview last week he said it was no good cancelling the tour if club teams then had their international stars playing in lucrative friendlies.
