FRANKFURT - Seemingly fearing the worst, German satirists on Wednesday sent off the national football team to Euro 2004 by erecting a wooden monument with Germany's worst defeats.

The satirists, who all work for the popular Titanic magazine, also predicted Germany's group matches at the 12 June to 4 July finals in Portugal: a 7-1 defeat against the Netherlands, a 3-0 loss to Latvia and a 5-0 defeat to the Czech Republic.

The list of past defeats starts with a 9-0 drubbing by England in 1909, includes the famous 3-2 defeat against Austria at the 1978 World Cup and also the 5-1 humiliation in Romania two months ago.

The three metre high wooden wall was unveiled in front of the German football federation headquarters ahead of the final team news conference before the departure to Portugal.
