German prosecutors said Thursday they had pressed espionage charges against two Libyans accused of collecting details on exiled Libyan opposition groups in Europe.

The pair, identified only as 42-year-old Adel Ab. and 46-year-old Adel Al., allegedly conducted spying operations in Germany and throughout western Europe from August 2007 until their arrest on May 13, 2010, prosecutors said.

Their purpose was "to weaken exiled opposition movements to the point of obliteration," prosecutors had said in an earlier statement.

The two have been held in custody in Berlin since May.
