Hamburg (dpa) - Representatives of Airbus workers in Germany Wednesday rejected the "Power8" programme of cuts aimed at restoring the company to profitability.

In an initial reaction to the cutbacks announced by Airbus management in Toulouse, the IG Metall trade union described the programme as the "wrong move."

Under the cuts programme, some 3,700 jobs are to be cut in Germany.

"We reject the exaggerated cuts measures and will discuss further steps with the workforce," the head of the northern coastal division of IG Metall, Jutta Blankau, said.

"The struggle to secure the future of Airbus in Germany has only just begun," she added.

The union plans meetings at all Airbus' German plants on Friday.
