Berlin -- A German woman who allowed her two-year-old son to starve to death over Christmas while she went to visit friends has been jailed for eight years, a court spokesman said on Wednesday.

The unnamed 25-year-old left her already sick toddler, Robin, at home with just a few cakes and a thermos flask of drink while she and her second son went to celebrate Christmas elsewhere.

When she returned, almost three days later, they found Robin almost dead but failed to call for medical attention. The boy died two days later.

The case follows a similar case of maltreatment in Germany earlier in the week when the parents of a three-year-old girl allegedly allowed her to starve to death, raising questions about the standard of the country's social services.
