Authorities have accused the local social services of failing to help the unstable young mother, who moved houses nine times in just a few years and gave birth twice at home while alone.

Zwickau -- A German woman was jailed for eight years on Wednesday for killing two of her babies and hiding their remains in plastic bags at different locations but was acquitted in a third case.

The bodies of the three little girls were found in late 2007 in three different flats in the eastern town of Plauen: one in a flowerpot on a balcony, another in a suitcase at the home of the defendant's grandmother and a third in a freezer in a flat where the 29-year-old had once lived.

The babies died in 2002, 2004 and 2005. The cause of death was unclear because the corpses were so badly decomposed. The woman, Susan F., denied killing them and said they had died suddenly.

She also has two sons born in 2000 and 2006. All five children are believed to have been fathered by the same man, with whom she had a 10-year relationship.

He told investigators that he had not noticed the two other pregnancies because he often travelled for work.

Germans have been horrified by a series of cases in recent years of mothers killing their children.

In the most notorious, Sabine Hilschenz from eastern Germany, was convicted of manslaughter of eight babies. She hid their remains in buckets and flowerpots as well as in an old fish tank at her parents' home.
