Berlin (AFP) - The number of unemployed in Germany will drop below 3.5 million in September or October, the head of the country's labour office said in an interview to be published Monday.

"The current figures have not yet been published but I'm expecting us to pass below 3.5 million this month or next month," Frank-Juergen Weise told the Berlin daily Tagesspiegel, according to an extract of the interview released Sunday.

Weise predicted an average figure of 3.7 million unemployed over the whole of 2007, but said that the yearly average for 2008 should drop to 3.5 million.

With the economy growing, unemployment fell in August to 3.705 million job seekers, 10,000 less than in the previous month.

Official figures for September are due to be published on September 27.
