NEW DELHI - A 47-year-old German woman was raped by the driver of her hired vehicle and another man in the northern Indian tourist town of Jodhpur on Wednesday night, police said on Thursday.
The two men responsible for raping her have been arrested, Jodhpur police chief Ravi Prakash Meharada said by telephone.
A spokesperson for the German embassy in New Delhi confirmed the incident. "We are in contact with the victim and the competent authorities in Jodhpur," he said.
The tourist had arrived in Jodhpur on Wednesday evening from Rajasthan's capital Jaipur. She had hired an auto-rickshaw later that night to take her to the guest house where she was staying, the police official said.
Instead of taking her there, the auto-rickshaw driver and his friend took her to a secluded area near a dry riverbed in the suburbs of the city and raped her, the police said.
Hearing her cries for help, residents of a nearby village rushed to her rescue. Her assailants escaped and the villagers informed the police who took the woman to a hospital in the city.
"She gave us a clear description and the villagers gave us the number of the auto-rickshaw and we have arrested the culprits," Meharada said.
He said the woman had returned to the guest house after treatment at the hospital. "She has been asked to stay in the city for a couple of days to enable us to press charges against her assailants," Meharada said.
He said attempts were on to recover a mobile phone and cash stolen from the victim.
