German tenor Peter Hofmann dead at 66: press
German tenor Peter Hofmann, a Wagner specialist who later turned to pop music and musicals, died overnight at the age of 66, media reports said Tuesday.
He died in a Bavarian hospital of complications from pneumonia after a long battle with Parkinson's disease, his brother told the daily Rheinische Post.
Hofmann was a star of the famous Wagner opera festival in Bayreuth, southern Germany and performed at the world's great concert houses including the Scala in Milan, the Bolshoi in Moscow and London's Covent Garden.
He later released several pop albums and performed the lead role in the musical "The Phantom of the Opera".
Media reports said he died in poverty after illness forced him from the stage and two divorces cost him dearly.
