German soldier killed, one wounded in Afghanistan
A 33-year-old German soldier was killed and another wounded when an armoured troop carrier hit an explosive device in northern Afghanistan, German authorities said Wednesday.
An Afghan interpreter, on patrol with them, was also hurt in the attack which involved two bomb explosions, the armed forces' general-inspector Volker Wieker told a news conference.
This brings to 49 the number of German soldiers killed in Afghanistan since the end of 2001.
The attack, which occurred some 14 kilometres (nine miles) north of Kunduz, was followed by a shooting incident when German reinforcements opened fire on a fast-approaching civilian car, Wieker said.
There was no immediate information on whether the warning shots, which hit the car, caused any casualties.
There are currently about 5,000 German troops serving in Afghanistan as part of a US-led NATO force, the third-largest foreign contingent, on a mission that is unpopular in Germany.
