AACHEN, Germany, Aug 20, 2007 (AFP) - German police arrested a 51-year-old man on Monday who they said had confessed to murdering five women and girls between 1983and 1990.

The former insurance salesman was identified by DNA after police cross-checked a fingerprint he had given after being arrested for the theft of scrap metal.

The DNA was a perfect match for a sample left by the killer of a 17-year-old girl who was murdered while hitchhiking in 1984.

Police said the man had admitted murdering five victims ranging in age from 15 to 31.

All of the victims had been sexually assaulted before being murdered. In three cases, they were tied up and raped before being strangled.

The victims all came from the area around the city of Aachen near Germany's border with the Netherlands and Belgium.
