WIESBADEN - The number of people killed in traffic accidents in Germany fell to a record low for the first eight months of this year, statistics showed.

The Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden said 3,766 people were killed in traffic accidents between January and the end of August - 15 percent, or 642, down on the same period last year.

It was the lowest level since records were first kept in 1953.

In August alone, 576 road users were killed - also a record low for the month and 16 per cent down on August 2003.

That was despite a two percent increase in the overall number (181,100) of road traffic accidents compared to August last year.
