German retail sales plummeted by 2.4 percent in March compared with the previous month, well below expectations, figures released on Tuesday by the national statistics office showed.

Analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires had forecast a much smaller drop of 0.2 percent on the month, and the result pushed first quarter retail sales in the biggest European economy down to their level of early 2009.
