German producer prices, the cost of goods at the factory gate, gained 0.3 percent in May from April, markedly slower than the previous month's rate of 0.8 percent, official data released on Friday showed.

Analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires had nonetheless forecast a more modest monthly increase of 0.1 percent in May.

Compared with May 2009, producer prices were 0.9 percent higher, the Destatis office said, following 12-month rates of minus 1.5 percent and plus 0.6 percent in March and April, respectively.
