German police raid suspected Islamists in Berlin

The Bild daily said on its website that several Chechens were taken into custody on suspicion of plotting to murder in the overnight raids in the German capital.

Berlin -- German police carried out raids on suspected Islamists in Berlin on Wednesday, police said, with press reports saying they centred on people from Russia's troubled Chechnya region.

"I can only confirm that raids took place today in the Islamist 'scene,'" a police spokesman told AFP, adding the operation was part of an investigation by state prosecutors.

The Bild daily said on its website that several Chechens were taken into custody on suspicion of plotting to murder in the overnight raids on 28 flats in the German capital.
