German police find two dead in imported cable drum
Two men found dead in a cable drum imported by truck from Greece by way of Italy were likely to have been illegal immigrants who died of heat exhaustion, German authorities said Tuesday.
The bodies were discovered on Sunday in Fulda, central Germany, after a truck driver checking on the rigging of his load of cable drums became suspicious of the smell coming from one of them, police said.
A spokesman for the prosecutor's office in Fulda said the two had died of strokes likely brought on by heat exhaustion.
No identification was found, but photos found on the men suggested they might have been illegal immigrants from North Africa, the spokesman added.
One was aged between 20 and 25, the other about 30.
The time of death could not be properly ascertained.
The cable drums originated in Greece, and the prosecutor's spokesman suggested the two men were sealed in the drum from the outside.
