A German police dog savaged his handler after turning on him for no apparent reason, biting both his arms down to the bone and leaving him hospitalised, the Bild daily reported Friday.

"I said 'sit!' to Don and he just went for me," said policeman Siegfried Berger, 52. "I really can't understand it. In 30 years' experience, something like this has never happened."

The large, powerful two-year-old Giant Schnauzer dragged his handler into a ditch and subjected him to a horrific 30-minute ordeal before a passer-by alerted police.

They were scared to shoot in case they hit their colleague but in the end managed to tranquilise the dog. Berger was then airlifted to hospital where he underwent a three-hour emergency operation.

Don's fate was unclear.
