RIO DE JANEIRO - A German adventurer who wanted to paddle around the world in his kayak was murdered in northeastern Brazil, media reports said.

The 39-year-old resident of Frankfurt was apparently killed in Para province from a gun wound in his throat, the reports said.

The crime occurred on the Mutuquara river on Marajo island, near the town of Breves.

Two men, a father and son, have been arrested as suspects and were identified as boat thieves. The kayak and about EUR 50 were missing from the crime scene.

The German, whose name was given as Albrecht Engelbach, has worked as a tour guide and diver in Sao Luis, the capital of the northeast Brazilian province Maranhao, for a number of years in Brazil.

The kayak fanatic had told a regional television broadcaster that his journey, which began 20 days ago, was to paddle around the world, and his first destination was the Caribbean.
