Berlin (dpa) - German passports will carry fingerprints of the people they are issued to from 2007, the government said Wednesday.

Two fingerprints will be saved on the chip used on German passports since 2005 to store a digital photo of the bearer, said chief government spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm.

Wilhelm said the German cabinet had approved a change of law to allow storing of fingerprints. Easy approval of the bill is expected in parliament.

The move follows a European Union directive aimed at making travel documents more difficult to forge.
