WIESBADEN/BERLIN - German party-goers literally brought down the house Saturday night with their energetic dancing, causing the floor to collapse into the room below as they brought in the New Year.

Police in Loehnberg, in Hesse state, said that one person was seriously injured and several sustained minor injuries. Rescue workers could not pull out the injured immediately because of the danger the house would collapse.

The accident happened in a multi-family dwelling.

Elsewhere, police and firefighters across Germany were kept busy with fisticuffs and accidental fires set off by the traditional German send-up of fireworks outside private households.

Hundreds of thousands gathered at Berlin's Brandenburger Tor to greet the new year and kick off next summer's 1006 World Cup football tournament that will take place in Germany.

About 1,600 rockets lit up the night skies over the capital.

Before the noisy eruption, Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble greeted representatives from the 31 countries that will compete in the tournament.

At midnight, the two-kilometre long stretch between the victory column and Brandenburger Tor was filled with the sound of champagne bottles being uncorked.
