Karlsruhe, Germany (dpa) - Germans should not underestimate the threat from Islamist terrorists, Germany's top anti-terrorism official, federal prosecutor-general Monika Harms, warned Friday.

While there was no call for panic, security authorities had to remain alert and intervene early, said the prosecutor, who came under fire last month for ordering the arrest of a group of Arab men who claimed they only spoke as a joke of bombing an Israeli airliner.

"In our opinion, the threat from Islamist terrorism is not to be under-estimated," she said in the federal justice capital, Karlsruhe. She added that it was wrong to consider Germany a mere safe haven where terrorists remained out of sight and did not mount attacks.

The prosecutor-general is in charge of investigating and bringing terrorists and subversives to trial.
