German no-fly period extended to 0000 GMT
German airspace will remain closed until 2:00 am (0000 GMT) Wednesday due to the giant plume of volcanic ash from Iceland, but flights will be granted permission to fly visually, Germany's air safety agency said.
But the DFS agency authorized take-offs and landings from the northern port cities of Hamburg and Bremen between 11:00 pm (2100 GMT) Tuesday and 2:00 am (0000 GMT) Wednesday.
The authorisation to fly visually, rather than relying on instruments, will allow Lufthansa, Europe's biggest airline, to resume long-distance flights and to gradually resume domestic and European flights during the day.
