New car registrations in Germany, a key gauge of demand in one of the most important sectors of Europe's biggest economy, rose in December and over the whole of 2011, official data showed Tuesday.

A total 244,501 new cars were registered last month, an increase of 6.1 percent year-on-year, the German federal motor transport authority calculated in its monthly statistics.

That brought new registrations for the full year up to 3.174 million cars, an increase of 8.8 percent over 2010, the authority said.
