Two German navy crewmen were briefly arrested on the Greek island of Crete early Friday after an alleged drunken assault on local coastguards, authorities said.

The detainees, who injured two Greek coastguards, were later released on orders from a prosecutor in the city of Iraklio pending an investigation.

The two 25-year-olds are part of a squadron of three German navy frigates that docked at Iraklio on Thursday after assisting civilian evacuation efforts in conflict-torn Libya earlier in the week.

The coastguard said a group of 15 German sailors were involved in the alleged incident.

One of the injured Greek coastguards was treated at a hospital for minor injuries but was later released, local police said.

The frigates are scheduled to sail from Iraklio to Lisbon on Sunday.
