RIO DE JANEIRO - A German woman accused of shooting at hikers who approached her ranch in Brazil is missing and authorities have found the charred wreckage of her car, media reports said Wednesday.

Investigators are treating Alessandre Schleifer's disappearance as a possible crime, reports said. Schleifer, 45, has been missing since Sunday, along with another woman, apparently a friend.

Schleifer has lived on a ranch in Cachoeiras de Macacu, about 100 kilometres northeast of Rio de Janeiro. Her car was found in Rio de Janeiro province.

Police were repeatedly informed that Schleifer fired shots at hikers who approached her ranch, reports said. It was unclear Wednesday if there was any connection between her disappearance and the alleged shooting incidents.

A search of Schleifer's home revealed weapons and ammunition, police told Brazilian media.
