RHEINFELDEN - A 41-year-old man shot his parents, children and estranged wife to death late on Saturday in south-western Germany before gravely wounding himself, German police said.

The man made an emergency call to police on Saturday night from the family's home in Rheinfelden in the state of Baden- Wuerttemberg.

He refused to give details, and two officers arriving at the scene found the man's 30-year-old wife and their two children, ages 4 and 7, dead of gunshot wounds in the home, and his parents, ages 74 and 79, shot to death in an adjoining apartment. The suspect was critically wounded, lying next to a revolver in a bedroom.

The man and his wife had reportedly had marital problems, and she had moved into an apartment and was separated from him for the last few months.

A police spokesman said that the man was hospitalised in grave condition and was not likely to survive, though he had undergone emergency surgery.
