LOHMAR, GERMANY - A 42-year-old man on Monday shot dead his son, his wife and her companion before taking his 11-year-old daughter hostage in a family drama near the German city of Cologne which police believe was caused by jealousy.

Responding to calls from the police, the man later released the girl. He then killed himself with an automatic weapon.

Neighbours described the man, who worked as a taxi driver, as violent. Nor the name of the man or his family was immediately available.

Monday's bloodbath in Lohmar, near the western city of Cologne, had followed months of family argument and mutual recriminations, police said.

The man broken into the house in Lohmar, which belonged to him and his wife.

Neighbours said the two, who were not divorced, had lived separately since March. They claimed he hit his wife and that he had also worked as a pimp.

Police believe the man killed first his wife (41) and her friend (40) with several shots, before he killed his son aged 16.

They said that the man, threatened to shoot himself and his daughter if the house was stormed by police.

Police succeeded in convincing the man over the telephone to release his daughter, who escaped unharmed and is now being cared for by psychiatrists.

When police eventually raided the house, they found first the three victims. They then discovered the man in the attic with gun wounds. He died later.
