MANILA - A 51-year-old German man has killed two people and wounded two others over a family dispute in a northern Philippine town, a police report said Monday.

According to the report the suspect fired his pistol inside a village hall in Jones town in Isabela province, 225 kilometres north of Manila, after a failed mediation bid over a family land dispute on Sunday.

The police report said one of the suspect's brothers-in-law and the village chief were killed in the shooting. Two other people, all relatives of the German's Filipino wife, were wounded, the report added.

After the shooting the suspect allegedly barged into a neighbour's house and was knocked unconscious with a soft drink bottle by a resident.

Police said the suspect is currently detained in the town's municipal jail and criminal charges were being readied to be filed against him.

No other details about the suspect were immediately available and it was not known how long he had been in the Philippines.
