WERNBERG-KOEBLITZ, GERMANY - After an armed German opened fire in a bar, killing one person and injuring eight, police launched a dragnet search Monday in hills near the Czech border.

The suspect, identified as a 49-year-old local villager, had had a head start on his pursuers, fleeing under cover of night.

Morning fog further delayed the start of the manhunt, since the ground was not visible from police helicopters sweeping the area near Wernberg-Koeblitz, 170 kilometres northeast of Munich.

Police said there had been no arguments beforehand and the suspect's motive was unknown. He first fired a shot through a window of the bar late Sunday evening, then stepped into the entranceway and shot dead a 67-year-old man. He sprayed bullets round the barroom.

Some of the injured were in critical condition Monday.
