HAMBURG - Police Monday arrested a 40-year-old man who deposited the severed head of his wife in a petrol station forecourt.

"Go on, call the police," the man told the shocked attendant who witnessed the grisly sight at 5 a.m.

Police who arrived at the scene detained the man and went to his nearby home where they found the torso of his wife and a knife thought to have been used in the crime.

The couple's two young children who were in the house at the time were being cared for by Hamburg social workers.

Police said the man appeared to be in a confused mental state and was being interrogated to determine a motive for the killing.
