German man arrested in Latvia for kidnapping
Man detained after daughter goes missing.
Latvia -- A German man was detained at Riga airport in Latvia Tuesday morning on suspicion of kidnapping his three-year-old daughter from neighboring Lithuania.
The man was held by police after a joint operation between Lithuanian and Latvian police. The child's mother had reported her missing on Monday.
"We received a telephone call from our police officers on the Latvian border this morning, telling us they had been notified by Latvian officials about the detention of the man and his daughter at Riga airport," said Albinas Strunyla of the Klaipeda district police in western Lithuania where the girl's mother lives. "The daughter is well."
Both German and Lithuanian courts have ruled that the girl was being kept illegally in Lithuania, as the mother had refused to return her to Germany in accordance with an earlier agreement.
The German citizen and his daughter are being taken back across the border, reported Lithuanian national radio.
