Palma de Mallorca, Spain (dpa) - A Germany holidaymaker who got lost on the Spanish island of Mallorca lit a fire in the forest to call for help, Spanish press reports said Saturday.

The man lost his way when out walking in the mountainous region of Capdepera in the east of this island.

As he didn't have a mobile phone, he kindled a fire to call attention to his position.

The fire brigade was able to put the fire out quickly and rescue the tourist.

Forest fires on Spain's Canary Islands destroyed 11,000 hectares of land during the week, and Spanish authorities have placed the south of the country on the highest level of alert as a heatwave spreads across from Africa, increasing the risk of fires.
