BERLIN - German Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble was doing very well after undergoing an operation for an undisclosed problem at a hospital Friday, a spokesman said.

Schaueble, who is 63, has been confined to a wheelchair since being shot by a deranged man at a political rally in 1990. He has had to undergo several medical procedures over the years in relation to injuries suffered in the shooting.

"The operation was concluded successfully and the minister is doing very well under the circumstances," said the spokesman.

It is not clear when Schaeuble will return to work, he said.

Schauble has won the admiration of many Germans for his hard-headed determination to stay in politics and for speaking openly about his condition.
