German industrial orders fell by 4.0 percent in September on a monthly basis, data released by the economy ministry showed on Friday, the biggest drop since January 2009 in Europe's biggest economy.

The drop dwarfed a forecast decline of 0.4 percent compiled by Dow Jones Newswires, erased a revised gain of 3.5 percent in August and underscored the uncertain level of economic recovery across the 16-nation eurozone.
