German import prices in April jumped 7.9 percent from a year earlier, the biggest increase since August 2008, official data showed Friday.

On a monthly basis, import prices in Europe's biggest economy gained 2.0 percent from March, the Destatis office said, as a weaker euro increased the cost of energy imports paid for in dollars.

The cost of crude oil and mineral oil products was 3.3 percent higher than in April 2009 and up 1.4 percent from March.
