MANILA - A German fugitive wanted for internet fraud has been arrested in the Philippines and would soon be deported, an immigration official said on Thursday.

The suspect, 56-year-old Manfred Macht, was arrested 21 December 2004 in Cebu City, 585 kilometres south of Manila, according to immigration chief Alipio Fernandez.

Fernandez said the immigration bureau and the National Bureau of Investigation hunted down Macht after the German Embassy informed authorities that the suspect was wanted in Germany.

"Macht is the subject of an outstanding warrant of arrest, which stemmed from 32 cases of internet fraud filed before a court in Cologne," he said.

Macht is also wanted by 37 local public prosecution officers and 20 criminal investigation departments in Germany in connection with more than 1,000 cases of internet fraud.

"According to the German Embassy, Macht's crimes have caused damages to his victims amounting to millions of euros," Fernandez said.

Fernandez said the immigration bureau will order Macht's deportation within the week, and three members of the German federal police have arrived in Manila to escort the fugitive back home.
