German fires employees for not smoking
One manager is fed up with all the picking on smokers and takes matters into his own hands.
Berlin (Expatica) -- The owner of a small German IT company fired three employees – all non-smokers – after they requested a smoke-free environment.
Thomas J. who manages the IT company in Buesum north of Hamburg said the three employees were fired because they were disruptive, he told the Hamburger Morgenpost.
Most of Germany's federal states have laws banning smoking in public places including in pubs and restaurants. Still, there are exceptions to the ban such as for small workplaces.
"I can't be bothered with such trouble-makers," Thomas told the newspaper. "We're on the phone all the time and it's just easier to work while smoking."
And besides, it is time for smokers to fight for their rights, he added.
"Everyone picks on smokers these days," he complained. "It is time for revenge: I am only going to hire smokers from now on."
