The German Football Federation blamed both the large distance from Germany down to South Africa and the high cost of flights to the continent for the lack of interest.

Berlin -- German fans have shown a 'very weak' interest in tickets to see their heroes play at next year's World Cup in South Africa, the German Football Federation (DFB) said Thursday.

"The interest is very weak," Wolfgang Niersbach, the general secretary of the DFB, admitted to German on-line magazine Sport-Bild.de.

Niersbach blames both the large distance from Germany down to South Africa and the high cost of flights to the continent for the lack of interest.

Since last Sunday, fans have been able to buy tickets for Germany's Group B clashes against Australia on June 13, Serbia on June 18 and Ghana on June 23 from FIFA's home page.

FIFA have allocated German fans 8,400 tickets for the game with Australia in Durban, 5,500 for the match against Serbia in Port Elizabeth and 11,400 for the game against Ghana in Johannesburg.
